Notes from July 2013 Meeting

July 22, 2013 Leave a comment

We had a stellar July meeting with a discussion led by Greg Myers, in-house Scrum Coach for ShareBuilder by Capital One. The turnout was impressive.

Greg got the audience up and participating with a quick group activity to categorize and contrast key features of Kanban and Scrum. He then facilitated a discussion of Kanban, Scrumban and Scrum. The discussion included an excellent description of Affinity estimating, different aspects of measuring velocity and ways to meet forecasting needs. The discussion included a good deal of input from the audience with several examples of real experiences from participants.

From there, we had a great audience-guided discussion on a number of additional aspects, including:

  • Organizing stories into Minimal Viable Feature
  • Aspects of different teams specialization, i.e. feature- or component-based
  • Using Kanban for discovery
  • How to move toward baking quality in, as opposed to finding defects through inspection

Stay tuned for exciting news about August and September events!

Meeting #3 Notes: Dislocated Agile

August 28, 2012 Leave a comment

August 16, 2012 @ Deloitte Digital
10 attendees

Prepared Topic:
Dislocated Agile, Quality Assurance Architect at Deloitte Digital

Notes from Presentation:

See the Prezi here.
It was a sparsely attended meeting, likely due to the beautiful weather. But, the 8-10 of us who attended had a very lively discussion about the challenges of distributed agile teams. Guided by the prezi, we spent a lot of time building a nuanced understanding of how our various organizations have handled distributed teams (successfully or not).
The 2 big take aways (based on the experience of attendees, YMMV):
  • distributed agile can work really well
    • but, the only times it worked well were on projects that had no front-end component
  • budgeting travel to bring your team together for even a few weeks at the beginning of your project was seen as instrumental for getting distributed teams on the right path early on
    • additional trips may be necessary if you have a difficult patch or a particularly long project
